Bought something on holiday that became defective shortly afterwards? Trouble with rental cars or hotel accommodation booked from home? Delayed plane on the return flight? In case the holiday turns out differently than planned you should know what to do to exercise your rights. Even better: You can also say it!

Especially for the summer holidays the European Consumer Centres Network (ECC-Net) launches a unique mobile application: the ECC-Net: Travel App. It is an indispensable travel companion inside the European Union as well as in Iceland and Norway: the application helps consumers to cope with difficult situations on their holiday abroad and to express their consumer rights in the language of the destination country. The ECC-Net: Travel App provides legal knowledge and language support in 23 EU languages plus Norwegian and Icelandic.

The different topics are: retail purchases, car rental, hotel accommodation, medical treatment, air and rail transport as well as bus and marine travel.
A section with useful information offers important phone numbers and contact details for every day emergencies. The app is free of charge and works offline to avoid the roaming trap. It is available for mobile devices with iOS, Android and Microsoft Windows operating systems and can be downloaded here:

The ECC-Net: Travel App was launched on 2 July 2014 in the European Parliament in Strasbourg in the presence of European Commissioner for Consumer Policy Neven Mimica and MEP Andreas Schwab. Commissioner Mimica said: “A successful Single market depends also on citizens knowing their Consumer rights. We welcome this initiative which continues to raise awareness amongst Europe’s consumers and makes it easier for consumer travelling across Europe to exercise their rights”.

MEP Andreas Schwab underlined the benefit for European consumers: “Today, travelling in Europe has become a common thing – and it’s great to have now a tool which allows every European citizen to cope with any difficult situation he or she might encounter during a journey in Europe. I am particularly delighted that this app is available in 25 languages and that it can be used by millions of European consumers. The launch of this app is a real achievement for a strong European consciousness amongst the Europeans!”

The ECC-Net: Travel App is a joint project of all 30 members of the ECC-Net. There is a European Consumer Centre in every EU member state as well as in Norway and Iceland offering free consumer help and advice. The Centres are co-funded by the European Union.
