To be a package tour the tour offered by the tour operator must comprise a variety of services compiled to form a package and sold at an all-inclusive price. The tour must have a duration of more than 24 hours or comprise one bed-night.
Charter tours, cruises and coach trips with hotel stays and theatre packages are typical examples of package tours.
A package tour does not necessarily include transport. It may also be a package comprising hotel and a tourist service, such as an opera visit or tickets to a sports event. The only requirement is that the tourist service forms a significant proportion of the tour.
All EU countries have implemented legislation on package tours based on the EU Package Holiday Directive. This legislation ensures you as a consumer certain rights and some protection when booking a package tour.
The package tour directive is a socalled minimum directive, which means that the individual EU countries may choose to implement better consumer protection in their national legislation than the protection provided by the directive. However, the level of protection must not be lower than that required by the directive.
In Denmark, the rules are set out in the Danish Package Tours Act.
