Good advice on payment on the Internet

Article

If you comply with a few basic rules you need not worry about payment over the Internet.

Check the seller

It is characteristic of the more fraudulent conditions on the Internet that it is difficult to see who the seller is – who is behind the website.

Therefore, before shopping – and paying – on a website you should seek information about the seller’s identity.

Check payment security

Transmission and any subsequent retention of payment information (such as card number) must always be protected against the risk of unauthorised persons getting hold of the information. This can be done by using various forms of encryption, and the seller is required to inform you on the website which security methods he uses to protect your payment information.

You can check yourself whether the payment information is sent from a secure website by looking for a padlock at the foot of your browser window when you are on the page on which you type in the payment information.

Choose the right mode of payment

In addition to payment after receipt of the goods, the most secure modes of payment are:

Dankort, VISA-Dankort, Mastercard, Eurocard, American Express or another payment or credit card issued by a Danish bank.

If you use one of these modes of payment you can in certain situations always get your money back whether the seller wants it or not.

If, on the other hand, you pay by bank transfer or in any other way transfer the money to the seller, this option will not be available to you.

Check your statement of account

Whether you are on the Internet or not and whether you use a Dankort, home banking or any other modes of payment you should always check your statement of account from the bank.

The possibility cannot be entirely precluded that an error may arise or that a criminal will succeed in obtaining information which initially makes it possible to withdraw an amount from your account. If an amount has been withdrawn which you do not know of and which you have not authorised you must contact your bank, which must then prove that the money was withdrawn with your permission. If the bank is unable to prove this you will be entitled to have the money deposited into your account again.
